Calling All Dog & Puppy Lovers!
If you’re thinking about adding a dog or puppy to your home, now is the time to stop by the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) and meet your new best friend, as the shelter is practically bursting at the seams with 45+ dogs and puppies looking for their forever homes. The need is particularly acute due to a confluence of three factors:
- A large group of dogs taken in last week in need of sanctuary and support
- A regularly scheduled intake of dogs from overcrowded shelters in the south
- A larger than usual number of local surrenders
This is good news for dog and puppy lovers, as the chances of finding your forever pup is really strong with so many available.
You can view the dogs available right now on HAWS website or stop in during visiting hours, Monday – Friday from 1 – 5 pm and Saturday/Sunday from 11 am – 3 pm, at 701 Northview Road in Waukesha. Here’s a preview of a few super cute dogs and puppies that are available for adoption right now:
Foster to Adopt Program
If you’re interested in providing a home to a dog that may have a sadder story to tell, HAWS offers a “foster to adopt” program that provides a two-week trial run for you and your prospective pooch to make sure you are a match. You can see all the dogs available for this program on the HAWS website. Here are the stories of a few that might be your new best friend:
Cider
Cider is a three-year old girl who came to HAWS as a stray and shortly after arriving, staff noticed she had a peculiar kind of bark, and had her examined to see what was going on. After examination and scans, it was determined she needed a surgery called Laryngeal Paralysis Correction Surgery. Cider has since received this surgery but now has some restrictions to help her lead a full and happy life in her forever home. Staff say she is one of the happiest, most cheerful pups at the shelter.
Elvis
Elvis is a 6-year-old hound mix ready to fill your home with love and laughter. On recent slumber parties with foster caregivers, they report he is a fun and active boy who would do best in a home with no cats and older children. He loves hiking and has been calm encountering people, pets and a family of deer on his city and forest hikes. He also loves to snuggle on the couch with his people and does well in a crate for short periods of time.
Jade
Jade is a sweet 3-year-old mixed breed girl looking to find her forever home. She would do best with older kids and no other dogs but is good with cats. HAWS foster caregivers report that she is a little shy at first but loves snuggles and pets once she gets to know you. Jade does great on walks and loves toys and ropes but is not a lover of balls or bones. She’s mellow and low maintenance, and loves lying in the grass, watching squirrels, cats, cranes and deer in the yard.
Chanel
Chanel is a sweet, friendly, active mixed-breed 2-year-old female. She enjoys playing and working on new behavior skills as long as you take time for some affection as well. She rides well in a car and enjoys walking but can be a strong puller at times. Chanel would do best with a family that has older children. She has the potential to live with dogs of a similar play style and energy, but no cats. Staff report that she’s a quirky girl who loves to eat her breakfast out of muffin tins, loves to throw her toys in the air, and is a professional at doing the froggy sploot.
During the adoption and foster to adopt processes, the HAWS behavior team provides tips and techniques to help new adopters and their dogs make a successful transition to living well together. HAWS also provides classes and other services for you and your dog.
